Progress report - November 2019

Work is progressing well, despite recent very poor weather.

We are currently at 60 percent completion, which looks good for our planned finish date of Mid-January 2020.

So far 60,000 tonnes of surfacing has been renewed, much of it using the cold-recycling process which reuses old materials, reducing waste and the number of truck movements needed.

We have replaced line markings on 29,000 metres of carriageway and 1700 road studs.

Traffic recently was changed onto the other side of the carriageway. This change went really well and we are grateful for customers' cooperation and patience.

There is now a temporary 60mph speed limit in place through the work area which we hope will improve journey reliability.

Keeping customers informed of progress

We are making good progress on resurfacing the A1M from Leeming to Ripon. We have recently added information boards confirming that work will finish in 3 months and displaying a slider showing how close we are to completion. As the scheme progresses we will continue to update the boards, keeping customers informed.

A1M Leeming to Ripon resurfacing - planned overnight closures

Following work carried out on the northbound carriageway last year we have identified a 16km stretch of the A1M southbound carriageway between Leeming Bar and Ripon that is reaching the end of its serviceable life and is in need of resurfacing. We started work on 22 July 2019.

As with the work carried out on the northbound carriageway we will be using innovative recycling machinery that will dig up the existing road surface, which will be ground up by the machine and mixed with water, cement and bitumen. The machine will then immediately lay this new mixed material on the road behind and rollers will compact the material to form part of the new road surface.

This method of working has a number of benefits including:

· Resurfacing operation is much faster

· 70% fewer lorry trips will be needed to and from the construction site

· 60% less material will go to landfill

The scheme will cost around half the amount of a normal resurfacing scheme and it will last much longer – up to 20 years before another major reconstruction is required, although we may need to carry out smaller scale repairs to the road surface in that time.

10 November to 22 December 2019 between 8pm and 6am – Full Closure A1M southbound carriageway, J51 to J50 – diverting onto the A6055
